Seamless Cold-Drawn Low-Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes - China Suppliers & Factory for Optimal Performance
Manufacture
Tubes shall be made by the seamless process and shall be cold drawn and heat treated after the final cold draw pass at a temperature of 1200°F [650°C] or higher.

Mechanical Tests
1
Flattening Test — One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot or fraction thereof.
2
Flaring Test — One flaring test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot or fraction thereof.
3
Flange Test — When specified as a substitute for the flaring test, for tubes having a wall thickness (actual mean wall) less than 10% of the outside diameter, one test shall be made on specimens from each of two tubes from each lot or fraction thereof. For tubes other than specified above, the flange test shall not be required.
4
Hardness Test — Rockwell hardness tests shall be made on specimens from two tubes from each lot. The term lot applies to all tubes, prior to cutting, of the same nominal diameter and wall thickness which are produced from the same heat of steel. When final heat treatment is in a batch-type furnace, a lot shall include only those tubes of the same size and the same heat which are heat treated in the same furnace charge. When the final heat treatment is in a continuous furnace, a lot shall include all tubes of the same size and heat, heat treated in the same furnace at the same temperature, time at heat, and furnace speed.
5
Hydrostatic Test — Each tube shall be subjected to the hydrostatic test, or, instead of this test, a nondestructive electric test may be used when specified by the purchaser.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What manufacturing process is used for ASTM A179 tubes?
ASTM A179 tubes are manufactured using the seamless process. They are cold drawn and heat treated after the final cold draw pass at a minimum temperature of 1200°F [650°C].
What are the carbon content limits in ASTM A179 chemical composition?
The carbon (C) content in ASTM A179 tubes ranges from a minimum of 0.06% to a maximum of 0.18%, ensuring suitable mechanical properties for heat exchanger and condenser applications.
What mechanical tests are required for ASTM A179 tubes?
ASTM A179 tubes must undergo several mechanical tests including the Flattening Test, Flaring Test, Flange Test (when specified), Hardness Test (Rockwell), and Hydrostatic Test or nondestructive electric test as an alternative.
What industries commonly use ASTM A179 seamless tubes?
ASTM A179 tubes are widely used across industries including petroleum, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage production, power generation, off-shore oil drilling, pulp and paper, and sea water equipment applications.
What information should be included when ordering ASTM A179 tubes?
When placing an order, you should specify quantity, material name (seamless tubes), manufacture method (cold-drawn), size (outside diameter and minimum wall thickness), length, optional requirements, test report needs, specification number, and any special requirements.
Can a nondestructive electric test replace the hydrostatic test for ASTM A179 tubes?
Yes. According to ASTM A179 specifications, a nondestructive electric test may be used as an alternative to the hydrostatic test, provided it is specified by the purchaser at the time of ordering.
